So What is Meditation?

Well, there’s the Google aided definition of ‘meditate’:

“To focus one’s mind for a period of time, in silence or with the aid of chanting, for religious or spiritual purposes or as a method of relaxation”

And there’s the Latin combination of ‘meditari’ and ‘mederi’:

The first, “meditari”, means to think, dwell upon or to exercise the mind. The second, “mederi”, which mean’s to heal.

I guess a combination of these could be something along the lines of: Meditation is to focus one’s mind for a period of time to help heal the mind and body through relaxation. How about that for a definition?

But the reality is that there could be so many more ‘definitions’! It can also mean; transforming the mind, a deep peace of mind, a different level of consciousness or just awareness.

So what do I think meditation is? I think of it as the only time I really get to myself each day. The time that I connect with the inner me, or just take a break from the ‘real world’. As long as I can remember I’ve said you need to look after yourself before you can help others (not sure if that came from my family or a famous quote many years ago but I have tried to live by it). Meditation has become the time that I do that.

If you are meditating or start up the practice, you are likely to have your own thoughts on what meditation is. Feel free to share these in the comments below!
